With fewer than two months left of his collegiate career, Nebraska senior Jon May is wrestling to be the best.

NU Coach Mark Manning said this is it for him. He is healthy now and wrestling well. May, the only senior on the team and one of only two heavyweights, said everyone wants the best for him.

"We are just hoping Jon goes out with a bang," Manning said. "We want him to really reach his potential his senior year here."

May said he has enjoyed having wrestling in his life since he was five years old. He said it is not only a fun sport, but a tough one to be involved with. When May graduates this spring and ends his career with the Huskers, he said the thing he will miss most is the time spent with the team.

May came to NU from Hutchinson, Minn., in 2003, and his fellow wrestlers have been who he has grown closest to. May has spent the last five seasons with the team, and he said the squad is family-oriented, which makes life much more enjoyable.

As he grew with the team, things got easier for him. He learned the best ways to make improvements in his wrestling, since he has done it before.

"You kind of learn the ropes more," May said, "and you know what to do as far as makings strides and getting better."

May said he feels lucky to compete for a high-level program, and people are starting to notice the team's talent. The No. 2 Huskers will face the Tigers on Saturday at the NU Coliseum, where they can finally prove it on their home mat.

As for the NCAA Championships, which begin March 20-22 in St. Louis, he said it will be everything the team has been working for all year.

"The coaches are going to do what they can to get us ready," May said. "We will continue to train hard, getting better every day."

Ever since the NWCA National Duals in mid-January, Manning said May has built up his confidence, and his belief in himself is showing more than ever.

"Jon is our man right now," Manning said. "If he steps up, he will make a tremendous impact on our team's performance, our finish and the outlook of our season."

The Huskers have a lot of respect for the Missouri wrestling team, and Manning said it will be a good matchup. The team's confidence is up, having beaten four top-10 teams in five tries in January. He said Husker fans will really appreciate the effort the wrestlers have put into the program when the postseason comes around.

"I hope a lot of our students come out to watch our team," Manning said. "This is a really special group. We are going to feed off the energy the crowd is going to bring on Saturday night. We can really get it going big."
