A shelf of pens sits in the promotional product showroom in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln printing and copy services building.
There’s also a sample of hand gel, a pill dispenser and a pasta measurer.
These are among the dozens of items in the product showroom, which displays some of the various products that could have an organization’s label or a department’s Web site printed on it.
The showroom is one part of the services that printing services offers. Employees are trying to get the word out about the different services and products that they offer, said David Hadenfeldt, director of printing services.
“We want students to know we are on campus and that you don’t have to leave campus for these services,” Hadenfeldt said.
Printing services doesn’t actually print the different items themselves but works with six different vendors who will print the actual design on the different items. Printing services will work with the customer to ensure all of the designs are within the restrictions for the item’s size and shape and also that everything has the proper use of branding, such as the red “N,” which can only be used in certain spots.
Most designs won’t be too fancy, Hadenfeldt said, especially the smaller items, like pads of paper and pens.
“There’s not a whole lot you can do with a pen,” Hadenfeldt said.
Some items, though, are more unique. Printing services offers thousands of different items, said Charlotte Boe, estimator and scheduler for printing services. One that sticks out in Hadenfeldt’s mind is the bandana printed with a map of East Campus, which was “very popular.”
“Boy, that went over well,” Hadenfeldt said.
Some of the items are available in the showroom, which showcases items that the vendors sent for samples. There are also shelves of catalogs, including one dedicated to just pens from one brand.
“I think people want to touch and feel, not just look in the catalog,” Hadenfeldt said.
Most orders will have a minimum amount of items a customer can order, so students can’t just order one pen with a label on it. They can, however, fill an order if a student wants something for their organization or event.
“If you wanted to get 500 pens and want the best deal, we’re here,” Hadenfeldt said. “That’s the reason we’re here.”
Hadenfeldt encourages students to use the printing services available to them at their main office at 17th and Y streets, as well as their offices on both City and East campuses. Imagine, he said, a student coming in to copy and bind their thesis and dissertation, only to discover all of the different services provided for them.
“They will say, ‘I wish I’d known you were here,’” Hadenfeldt said. “If you don’t have time and are running around and need something, we take care of it.”
They are happy to help with services, Hadenfeldt said, whether the services are copying a document or creating a binding of a folder.
Or, if need be, ordering 500 labeled pasta measurers.
