Zac Lee was already going to enter this fall’s football season in the shadow of former Cornhusker Joe Ganz.
Now, he’ll also have to follow in the footsteps of Jammal Lord and Sam Keller.
The NU quarterback is changing his jersey number, switching from No. 3 to No. 5 on the Huskers’ most recent roster.
Though former NU I-back Marlon Lucky was the most recent Husker to wear the number, Lord also wore the number for the 2003-2004 season and Keller wore it in the 2007 Red-White Spring Game.
Cornerback Anthony West also wears No. 5 for NU. Incoming quarterback Taylor Martinez will take the No. 3 jersey Lee gave up.
Lee wasn’t the only Husker to change numbers for this season, as a number of NU players will be touting new jerseys this fall.
Kicker Adi Kunalic will go from No. 20 to No. 1. Defensive end Josh Williams will now wear No. 98, a number previously owned by Zach Potter. Fellow defensive end Cameron Meredith switched from No. 96 to No. 34. Cornerback Dejon Gomes, who joined NU in the spring, will join quarterback Kody Spano in wearing No. 7.
Freshmen and newcomers were also assigned their jersey numbers on the newest roster, which was released last week. Running back Rex Burkhead was given No. 22, defensive end Jason Ankrah will wear No. 9, wide receiver Brandon Kinnie will be No. 84 and offensive tackle Brent Qvale will take the No. 76 jersey that opened up when former Husker Lydon Murtha graduated.
